Chakras are energy centers which align along the spine and ascend from the root to the crown of the head. The focus is on moving beyond the first three chakras (conquering desire, fear, insecurity and the need for personal power) in order to access the higher energy centers at the heart, throat, third eye and crown of the head (the centers of compassion, unconditional love, authenticity, speaking truth, intuition, bodhi mind and experiencing the connection with the whole). This is the practice of awakening kundalini, the dormant serpent energy that resides at the base of the spine.
We work with the body, our vessel, using asana to make it strong, supple, open and balanced for our energy to move. We practice cultivating and directing energy using pranayama (breath exercises). We also use pranayama and meditation to quiet and focus the mind so we can be fully present to awaken the serpent. We must believe in the power of our soul as something bigger than our comprehension, without faith, we falter.
This movement of our energy, from the root to the crown of the head is the essence of our yoga practice. It also correlates with the movement of energy in our vital organs, energetic circulatory system and the emotional and mental structures that we must transcend to come to an enlightened state of being. This is the Buddha nature that we all have the potential to embody. This is deep….take it one breath at a time grasshopper. As long as you are aware of the path, you are moving forward with consciousness.
