This week I’m focusing on bandhas. They are such an important part of pranayama (breath work) and asanas (postures) that it’s important to cultivate an awareness of them every time you hit the mat. We work with three primary bandhas located at the root, below the navel and at the throat. These bandhas are locks which help retain and direct energy in the body. They also burn off impurities and give us a strength and support that can defy gravity. Energy and strength equals lightness in the body, mind and spirit. Bandhas are also very helpful off the mat. They support good posture in daily activities and also provide emotional and mental fortitude.
