Living Fearlessly! Yoga teaches us to shine a light into all the dark places we are afraid to look. Fear is at the root of our mental suffering. We can trace all the emotional states that cause us turmoil and pain, such as anger, jealousy, envy, greed, self-abuse, anxiety and depression, back to attachment which comes from fear. So how we handle and work with our fear is a powerful part of creating inner-peace and being able to thrive in our lives rather than wither.
The only way to overcome fear is to develop the capacity to sit with it. We have to be able to stare it down and see it for what it is…illusion. In that moment we can experience a lot of vulnerability, but we can also be brave and find the courage to be with our tenderness and no longer be afraid of it.
The practices of yoga crack us open so we can get to the inner workings of our heart and mind. You have to be willing to crack, to open up to what you find without judgement but with clarity. We work with the body to release tension and pain that is stored each time we unnecessarily kick into our fight or flight response. The asanas (postures) develop a sense of physical strength which enhances confidence and our ability to feel strong in tough situations. The asanas and pranayama (breath work) also increase awareness and movement of prana (energy) to break through our internal obstacles, clear the stored garbage and heal old wounds. Meditation allows us to do the same thing with the mind. We train it to become steadfast so we can see through our obstacles, we begin to let go of our mental garbage and heal old samskaras (mental emotional patterns).
